Our Books and Accompanying CDs teach nonstandard English-speaking children and adults to use standard English for speaking, reading, writing and standardized test-taking in school, the workplace and whenever else it is more advantageous to do so. (Audio-cassettes still available.)
We always start the standard English-acquisition process with speech, because children and adults tend to read, write and test the way they speak.
Our materials are bi-dialectic, which means that students and self-help individuals learn to switch situationally between their first speaking styles and the newly acquired standard style, using whichever dialect is more appropriate, comfortable or advantageous at any given time.

SPEAK STANDARD, TOO teaches students to master oral standard English grammar and pronunciation - rule by rule. Subsequently, students learn how to monitor themselves as they switch situationally, between their first speaking styles and the new standard dialect.
As discussed in Educator/SLP Info, Workshops and Classes and Our Mission, instructors always keep the Different, Not Deficient premise in mind as they teach in terms of same and different - not right or wrong.
Students or adults whose speaking styles contain grammatical and/or pronunciation differences due to nonstandard dialectic differences - such as Appalachian English, Black English (African American Vernacular/Ebonics) - foreign-accented English and/or American regional accents all benefit from using this text/tape/CD program.
The text is divided into Pronunciation Differences and Grammatical Differences. The pronunciation section focuses on consonant clusters, consonant sounds, vowel sounds and word-pronunciation differences. The grammatical section contains more than 25 lessons - from use of "ain't" to omission of "is" to standard past participle usage.
In order to teach mastery through practice, SST contains more than 180 drills, exercises and stories, all of which contrast standard pronunciation and grammatical features with their most common nonstandard equivalents.
The accompanying CDs/audiocassettes guide students through all of the text's pronunciation lessons and some of the grammar lessons. All of these auditory lessons include time for the student-listener to imitate and practice the target pronunciations or grammatical rules. Lesson page numbers are listed on the face of and tracked on each CD, and marked on the face of each audiocassette. The sets of 5 CDs or 4 audiocassettes both are enclosed in protective albums.

Teach Standard, Too is a 520-page teacher's manual comprised of two courses. Each course teaches nonstandard English-speaking students to acquire and master oral and written standard English, regardless of their age, race, ethnicity or dialectic/foreign language backgrounds. The manual's first course - SchoolTalk / FriendTalk (ST/FT) - is comprised of 95 scripted lessons for teaching K-12 students and adult nonstandard English-speakers to acquire and master oral and written standard English.

All of the lessons are introduced and conducted orally to the entire class, and take the students through the five-step, bi-dialectic process of systematically acquiring oral standard English pronunciation and grammar - rule by rule.
TEACH STANDARD, TOO's second course is comprised of four chapters in the manual's Appendix. These scripted sections offer an individualized curriculum - in contrast with ST/FT's classwide approach - for teaching oral standard English-acquisition to older students - high school through college and continuing education.

SchoolTalk / FriendTalk - the heart of the TST manual - is an oral standard English-acquisition course for English-speaking children who demonstrate dialectic differences in their speech and writing. The 95 scripted lessons follow the bi-dialectic approach and our five-step methodology.
ST/FT was written so that children (and adults) who speak nonstandard styles of English, can master oral and written standard English, regardless of their nonstandard dialects' origins.

Students, who may speak Appalachian English, or foreign language-influenced English, or a variety of African American/Black English/Ebonics, or Brooklynese, can all learn to speak, write, read and test in standard English within a respectful, linguistically-based and systematic curriculum.
In addition, and perhaps most importantly, children learn that the nonstandard English dialects they speak are Different, Not Deficient.
Systematic acquisition and mastery of standard English allow children to compete and perform in school in a manner that is commensurate with their true intelligence, talent and potential. The content of the ST/FT lessons emphasizes how and when the grammar and pronunciation of oral Standard English - school talk - differs from the students' various vernacular English dialects - friend talk.
The goal of the course is to encourage conscious contrast between the standard and nonstandard styles of English. Students learn: how their dialects' rules differ from the standard dialect's rules; to produce and practice school talk; and to switch situationally between school talk and friend talk.
When You Use ST/FT ...
You will not have to design lesson plans!
Each lesson provides you with a clear statement of the goals, the methods you will use to reach those goals and the materials you will need to implement the goals – usually just the manual, a flip chart or your chalk/oil board will suffice.
You will not have to deliberate about what verbal strategies you should use!
Each lesson provides you with detailed scripts – presented in large-print italics – so that they are easy to read while the manual rests on your lap.
You will not have to worry about which teaching techniques you should use!
Each lesson contains precise descriptions of how to implement the various activities - practice drills, skits, games and songs. These directions are printed in regular type, easily differentiated from the italicized scripts that you orally read to the students.
You will not have to think up activities!
Each lesson contains a variety of conversationally-based activities for practice and mastery. In addition, each lesson’s activities are easily applicable to all of the other lessons, and refers you to related lessons in the TST manual, WST journal and SST text/tapes-CDs set.
You will not have to worry if your class is made up of English-speaking children who have different dialectic and/or foreign language backgrounds!
Each lesson begins with a section entitled, Difference, which describes most of the variances from that lesson’s grammatical feature that you are likely to confront in your classroom, regardless of your students' dialectic or foreign-language backgrounds.
You will not have to plan related writing lessons!
After the students master a new standard rule, the writing lessons - which coordinate with the accompanying student journals - teach the children how to translate the new oral rule into writing and reading. A description of the student journal follows this section.
ST/FT is Divided into Twelve Units ...
Unit 1 contains an introductory lesson, which sets forth the different, not deficient premise and the bi-dialectic method of adding a new talking style without losing the first style.
Units 2 through 11 contain scripted lessons which follow the five-step method as they teach oral and written acquisition of standard English grammatical features. The scripts heighten awareness of more than 85 dialectic differences such as: omission of is; omission of s-endings; omission of ed-endings; issues regarding “negation” such as ain’t and double (emphatic) negatives.
Unit 12 focuses on pronunciation differences, particularly those differences which influence grammar and spelling, such as: ax / ask; reduction of final consonant clusters - las / last or miss / missed; omission of (r) and (er) .

Write Standard, Too is a per student journal, which coordinates with the SchoolTalk / FriendTalk writing lessons. It is designed to help students translate a newly-mastered oral grammatical rule into writing and reading.
The soft-cover journals contain lined pages with printed page numbers that refer to the associated writing lessons in the ST/FT grammar units. After students master a standard English grammatical rule, the writing lessons help them translate the new talking rule into writing and oral/silent reading.

Each writing lesson follows the same five-step method that the oral lessons use, and they are similarly scripted. As the students go through the "conscious contrast" progression, they learn to recognize when they have written lesson-related sentences in friend talk and how to switch them into the equivalent school talk sentences.
Once you become familiar with the teaching techniques and progression, you can use a writing lesson with any ST/FT lesson, whether or not it contains one. For this reason, some of the WST journal pages have no preprinted page references. In addition, you can use unnumbered pages for your own writing lessons, or when students just feel like doing independent writing.
Students like having journals that "match" their teacher's manual. They also like the special place on the back cover for their names, grade, school and teacher's name.
